Helicopter transport abroad is only covered as part of scheduled treatment in a hospital abroad.
Helicopter transport abroad as part of scheduled treatment
Conditions of coverage
Helicopter transport must be authorised by the CNS upon a favourable opinion from the Social Security Medical Board (CMSS).
Procedures
The insured person must take the necessary preliminary steps for the scheduled treatment abroad to be covered by the health insurance.
The attending physician must submit a prior request for coverage of helicopter transport costs:
- either by formulating the request on the application form for authorisation of treatment abroad,
- or by issuing a medical prescription arguing the need for helicopter transport.
This document (prescription or request for transfer abroad) must first be submitted to the CNS. The CNS carries out an administrative check of the file and then forwards the request to the CMSS for an opinion. In the case of a favourable opinion from the Social Security Medical Board, the CNS issues a certificate of coverage which is sent to the insured person.
Please note: An S2 form (prior authorisation for a transfer abroad) is mandatory for the coverage of such a transport.
In the case of an emergency, the request justifying the urgency does not have to be made in advance. However, it must be sent as soon as possible by the attending physician to the CNS, which carries out an administrative check of the file and then forwards the request to the CMSS for an opinion.
