What is important to know about the Luxembourg social insurance card?
The Luxembourg social security card has two distinct sides: a national side and a European side.
National side - Luxembourg social security identification card
- Identification number: This side of the card is the ‘social security identification card of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg’. It contains the 13-digit national identification number and the name of the insured person.
- Individual: Each insured person, as well as co-insured family members, must have their own card.
- Functionality: The card entitles the holder to coverage for healthcare, maternity and long term care services in Luxembourg.
- Period of validity: The card remains valid as long as the person is affiliated to the Luxembourg social security system.
European side - European Health Insurance Card
- Uniformity: The European side is what is known as the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) and is identical in all Member States.
- Functionality: It entitles the holder to coverage for urgent and immediately necessary healthcare during a temporary stay in the countries of the European Union (EU), the European Economic Area (EEA) and Switzerland.
- Duration of validity: The card is valid for a limited period, indicated by an expiry date on the card.
How to use the card?
The national side
The national side of the card must be presented at all medical consultations, in pharmacies or to any other healthcare provider and professional in Luxembourg.
If requested, it is also necessary to provide proof of identity.
The European Health Insurance Card, or its equivalent, the Provisional Replacement Certificate, can be used to obtain medical care during a temporary stay in a Member State of the European Union, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein or Switzerland.
It is sufficient to present the card or provisional certificate directly to the service provider on site, without the need for any prior procedure with the local fund.
For more details on the use of the European Health Insurance Card abroad, additional information is available on the website of the National Health Fund (CNS).
How do I get the card?
First card or card that has already expired
If the card has expired or if no card has been issued yet, it is possible to order one on the website of the Social Security Centre.
Card that is still valid but will expire soon
If the current card is still valid but will expire soon, a new card can be ordered by contacting the CNS via the contact form.
Card delivery deadline
A maximum deadline of 3 weeks is to be expected between the request and the delivery of the card to the official address. It is therefore advisable to take this deadline into account when placing the order and to communicate any change of address to the CNS to ensure the proper receipt of the card or other correspondence.
Provisional replacement certificate
In an emergency, a provisional replacement certificate, valid for 3 months from the date of issue, can be requested on MyGuichet.lu:
- If the request is made WITH authentication and with the eDelivery function activated, the provisional replacement certificate for the European Health Insurance Card will be sent directly to the secure private area on MyGuichet.lu.
- In the case of a request WITHOUT authentication and/or if the eDelivery function is not activated, the provisional replacement certificate for the European Health Insurance Card will be sent by post.
