Contraception plays an essential role in family planning and reproductive health management.

Choosing the appropriate contraceptive method is an important personal decision that requires a thorough understanding of the available options, regular medical consultations, and open communication with healthcare professionals.

How is contraception covered?

Contraception is covered under certain conditions. To receive free contraception, regardless of age, you must:

  • Hold a valid Luxembourg social security card;
  • Contact a Luxembourg healthcare provider (doctor, pharmacist or midwife).

The following services are provided free of charge:

  • Oral contraceptives: contraceptive pill and mini-pill, morning-after pill
  • Self-administered devices: contraceptive patch and ring.
  • Contraceptive methods requiring medical intervention: contraceptive injection and implant, intrauterine device.
  • Surgical sterilisation procedures: tubal ligation, vasectomy.

Is a prescription required?

Only the morning-after pill (emergency hormonal contraception) is available without a prescription. For other methods of contraception, it is necessary to consult a doctor first.

A midwife can prescribe a contraceptive pill, ring or patch) during the first six weeks after giving birth.

Conditions for coverage

The conditions for coverage depend on the method of contraception chosen.

Contraceptive pill, mini pill or injection, contraceptive patch or ring

Coverage is limited to the number of packs needed to cover at least three cycles of contraception. Smaller packs, for example for one cycle, are not covered.

A prescription can cover a maximum treatment period of 13 cycles.

Contraceptive injections administered by a doctor are included in the consultation fee.

Contraceptive implant

The contraceptive implant and the costs of insertion and removal under local anaesthetic are covered 100%, provided that the implant is effective for at least three years.

Intrauterine device

Coverage for this intrauterine device varies depending on whether it is:

  • A copper intrauterine device: 100% coverage provided that it is effective for at least 5 years.
  • A hormonal intrauterine device: 100% coverage provided that it is effective for at least 3 years.

Insertion and removal of the IUD

The costs of inserting and removing the intrauterine device and the ultrasound scan are covered 100%.

Tubal ligation

The following are fully covered:

  • The preliminary consultation with the gynaecologist regarding the effectiveness, mode of action and possible side effects of tubal ligation;
  • Pre-anaesthetic examination if tubal ligation is not performed during a caesarean section;
  • Hospitalisation costs;
  • Follow-up consultation 4 weeks after the procedure.

Vasectomy

The following are fully covered:

  • Preliminary consultation with a urologist regarding the effectiveness, mode of action and possible side effects of vasectomy;
  • Hospitalisation costs;
  • Follow-up consultation 4 weeks after the procedure.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Are you entitled to coverage of contraceptive costs if you purchase contraceptives abroad?

No.

Coverage is only possible if these services are provided in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.
