Tobacco addiction

Good to know

In the two years following its launch (2009-2011), the smoking cessation programme recorded an overall success rate of 30%.

Everything you need to know

How does the programme work?

The smoking cessation programme involves regular consultations with a doctor of your choice over a period of eight months.

This is an opportunity to assess your level of motivation, identify your strengths and discuss any difficulties you may encounter. To help you cope with withdrawal symptoms, your doctor may prescribe smoking cessation medicines and advise you on how to use them.

Conditions for eligibility for the smoking cessation programme

To be eligible for coverage under this programme, you must be insured with the National Health Fund or a competent public sector fund in Luxembourg.

During your first consultation with your doctor, you will sign an informed consent form to register for the smoking cessation programme.

How will the programme be covered?

Formalities for obtaining full reimbursement of medical fees

  • At the first consultation

To be eligible for 100% coverage, the doctor must invoice using code E40.

The insured person sends the invoice to the CNS to obtain reimbursement.

  • At the last consultation

To qualify for 100% coverage, during the consultation in the 8th month, the doctor must bill code E45, which is mandatory in order to claim the flat-rate reimbursement for medicines.

The insured person sends the fee statement, accompanied by the invoices for the medicines, if applicable, to the Health Directorate for validation.

The file will then be forwarded to the CNS for reimbursement.

  • Intermediate consultations are reimbursed as normal.

What is the coverage rate?

Medical consultations are covered at the normal reimbursement rate (88%).

The first consultation (E40) and the last consultation (E45) are covered in full (100%).

For withdrawal medicines, the insured person will receive a reimbursement of 50% of the costs incurred, up to a limit of €100.
