Additional reimbursement
Everyday life sometimes holds financial surprises, particularly when it comes to healthcare costs.
To deal with these unexpected expenses, requesting additional reimbursement is a key procedure. I am entitled to this if my healthcare costs exceed a certain threshold.
The CNS explains the basics on this page.
In a nutshell
When my personal contributions exceed a certain threshold, I can request an additional refund.
On this page, I can find out:
- How to calculate the threshold to be exceeded;
- Where to find the amount of my personal contributions;
- The list of benefits eligible for an additional refund;
- The formalities and deadlines for applying for an additional refund.
The form to submit my request online can be found on a separate page.
Everything I need to know

What is additional reimbursement and when am I entitled to it?
Additional reimbursement is calculated based on your personal contribution to your healthcare benefits.
This means that if, during a calendar year (between 1 January and 31 December of year N), my cumulative contributions exceed the threshold of 2.5% of my annualised contributory income from the previous year (N-1), I can request an additional reimbursement for the portion of contributions that exceeds this threshold.
This reimbursement is in addition to any other reimbursements to which I am entitled, which is why it is called 'additional reimbursement'.
Practical example
In 2023, I received a gross monthly salary of €3.000. I therefore calculate the threshold as follows:
- Gross monthly income (2023): €3.000
- Annual gross (2023): €3.000 x 12 = €36.000
- Threshold for 2024: 2.5% of €36.000 = €900
If my total personal contributions to healthcare exceed €900 in 2024, I can claim an additional refund for the difference: if my total reaches €1.100 in 2024, I can claim an additional refund of €200.
Good to know: my monthly taxable income is shown on my monthly payslip/pension statement.
The additional reimbursement, often referred to as supplementary payment, is provided for in Article 154bis of the CNS statutes.
Where can I find my cumulative personal contribution amount?
On the back of each reimbursement statement, under the heading ‘Additional payment’, you can see the total amount of your personal contribution on the date indicated, for the current year and the previous year.
The contributions of my co-insured persons are taken into account when calculating my contributions. I am the main insured person and it is therefore my responsibility to submit the claim.
Please note
The amount of my contribution for the previous year may still vary.
If I submit a claim this year for care received last year, my personal contribution for this care will be added to the total amount of my contributions for the previous year. The amount for the previous year may therefore change on the reimbursement statement.
Is there a minimum amount required for my claim?
Before submitting a claim, I check whether the amount of my cumulative contributions (indicated on each reimbursement statement) is at least equal to the minimum thresholds provided for by law:
- €470,41 for the year 2023
- €497,38 for the year 2024
- €509,68 for the year 2025
What services and supplies are subject to additional reimbursement?
The annual amount of my cumulative personal contributions consists of contributions to the following services and supplies:
- Medical care
- Dental care, except for prosthetics
- Nursing care
- Dietary care
- Physiotherapy and massage
- Speech therapy
- Midwifery
- Psychomotor therapy
- Spa treatments
- Costs for orthopaedic prostheses, orthoses and epitheses
- Pharmaceutical products
- Medical devices and equipment covered by health insurance
- Psychotherapy
When and how do I apply for an additional refund?
How?
The application for an additional refund must be made directly online using the application form at the bottom of the page.
When?
I must meet certain deadlines for my application.
I must submit my application:
- No earlier than 1 May for participation in the same year.
Example: In March 2024, I notice that my personal contributions for the same year 2024 already exceed the threshold. I can request an additional refund from 1st May 2024 at the earliest.
- At the latest before the end of the second year following the year in which the contribution reached the threshold.
Example: If the threshold is reached during 2024, I must submit my request by 31th December 2026 at the latest.
My application is for one year only, which I specify in my application. A new application must be submitted each year.
