Everything I need to know
- Vaccination against seasonal influenza
- Pneumococcal vaccination
- Human Papilloma Virus Vaccination
What conditions must I meet to be eligible for coverage of the seasonal flu vaccine?
My seasonal flu vaccine is fully covered (100%) if:
- I am 65 years of age or older during the current year,
Or if, in special cases to be justified on the medical prescription:
- I am pregnant;
- I have a chronic lung, heart, kidney or metabolic disease;
- I have a congenital or acquired immunodeficiency due to illness or medication;
- I have an autoimmune, neurological or neuromuscular disease with a high risk of aspiration pneumonia;
- I have haemoglobinopathy;
- I am under 18 years of age and my illness requires chronic treatment with acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin).
Please note! Only vaccines included in the positive list (under code ATCJ07BB02) will be covered.
What conditions must I meet to be eligible for coverage of the pneumococcal vaccine?
This vaccine is designed to prevent invasive pneumococcal infection in order to minimise the risk of complications, which can lead to illness and premature death. The list of beneficiaries eligible for coverage by health insurance has been drawn up on the basis of recommendations from the Higher Council for Infectious Diseases (CSMI).
My vaccine against invasive pneumococcal infections is fully covered (100%) if:
- I am between 65 and 85 years old and in good health,
- or I am at increased risk of developing a pneumococcal infection because:
- I have a chronic lung, kidney or heart condition;
- I am a smoker;
- I am an alcoholic, with or without cirrhosis;
- I have a meningeal defect;
- I have a cochlear implant.
Or I am immunocompromised due to:
- Congenital absence of the spleen;
- Splenectomy or functional asplenia;
- Sickle cell anaemia or other haemoglobinopathy;
- Congenital immunodeficiency;
- Neoplasia;
- Organ transplant;
- HIV infection;
- Immunosuppressive treatment.
How will my vaccination be administered?
Vaccines will be dispensed by the pharmacy of my choice in Luxembourg upon presentation of a medical prescription.
In adults, vaccination requires a double injection of a conjugate vaccine (Prevenar-13) and a polysaccharide vaccine (Pneumovax-23) 8 weeks apart.
A booster dose of the Pneumovax-23 polysaccharide vaccine is recommended every 5 years. A booster dose of the Prevenar-13 conjugate vaccine is not necessary.
How can I get vaccinated against Human Papilloma Virus (HPV)?
HUMAN PAPILLOMAVIRUSES (HPV) belong to a family of viruses with over 200 variants, at least 12 of which can cause cancer. Infections transmitted through skin-to-skin contact, particularly in intimate areas, are most commonly caused by HPV. Most men and women will come into contact with this virus during their lifetime.
Vaccines are offered free of charge by doctors until the age of 21 and beyond, depending on risk factors.
