Social protection abroad

In this section, the CNS informs me of my rights and the formalities to be completed if I go abroad for personal or professional reasons, or to study:

  • How I am covered and the formalities to be completed depending on my country of destination;
  • How to declare incapacity for work from abroad;
  • Healthcare subject to prior authorisation or not reimbursed;
  • Terms and conditions for reimbursement of scheduled treatment abroad.

I can also find useful information about my medical cover as a pensioner if I live abroad.

For any information about cross-border care, I find out how to find the National Contact Point and what they do.

My access to healthcare abroad

The terms and conditions for accessing care and reimbursement vary depending on whether the care is unscheduled (=necessary care) or scheduled.

  • Necessary medical care during a temporary stay abroad is defined as healthcare that cannot be postponed until I return to my home country without risking aggravating my state of health.
  • Scheduled medical care abroad is medical care that can be planned in advance and does not require immediate intervention.
