Contraception plays an essential role in my family planning and reproductive health management. Choosing the right contraceptive method for my individual needs is a personal and important decision.

How are my contraceptive costs covered?
To receive free contraceptive care, whatever my age, I need to:
- Have a valid Luxembourg social security card;
- Contact a Luxembourg service provider (doctor, pharmacist or midwife).
The following services are free of charge:
- Oral contraceptives: contraceptive pill and mini-pill, morning-after pill.
- Self-administered devices: contraceptive patch and ring.
- Methods of contraception requiring medical intervention: contraceptive injections and implants, IUDs.
- Sterilisation surgery: tubal ligation, vasectomy.
Do I need a prescription?
Only the morning-after pill (hormonal emergency contraception) can be obtained without a prescription. For other methods of contraception, I need to consult my doctor first.
What are the conditions for reimbursement?
The conditions for reimbursement depend on the method of contraception I choose.
Contraceptive pill, mini-pill, injection, patch or ring
Coverage is limited to the packs needed to cover contraception for at least three cycles. Smaller packs, for example for one cycle, are not covered.
A prescription may cover a maximum treatment period of 13 cycles.
The contraceptive injection carried out by a doctor is included in the consultation fee.
Contraceptive implant
Contraceptive implants and the cost of insertion and removal under local anaesthetic are reimbursed at 100%, provided the implant lasts at least three years.
IUD
The cost of this intra-uterine device varies depending on whether it is :
- A copper-coated IUD: 100% reimbursed, provided it lasts at least 5 years.
- A hormonal IUD: 100% reimbursed, provided it lasts at least 3 years.
Inserting and removing the IUD
The cost of inserting and removing the intra-uterine device, as well as ultrasound monitoring, is reimbursed at 100%.
Tubal ligation
The following costs are reimbursed in full:
- Prior consultation with the gynaecologist for information on the efficacy, mode of action and possible side-effects of tubal ligation;
- Pre-anaesthetic examination if tubal ligation outside the caesarean section;
- Hospitalisation costs;
- A follow-up consultation 4 weeks after the operation.
Vasectomy
Fully covered:
- Prior consultation with the urologist for information on the efficacy, mode of action and possible side-effects of vasectomy;
- Hospitalisation costs;
- A follow-up consultation 4 weeks after the operation.
Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
Will I be covered for contraception if I buy the devices abroad?
No.
Coverage is only possible if these services are provided in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.
