Hearing aids

I need a hearing aid!

I need to get a hearing aid to significantly improve my hearing quality, which is essential if I am to participate fully and effectively in everyday life.

Will my hearing aid be covered by health insurance, and what is the procedure?

Everything I need to know

What are the conditions for coverage?

My hearing aids will be covered under the following conditions:

  • The hearing loss reaches at least 30 dB on at least two of the frequencies between 500 and 3000 Hz, or the percentage of intelligibility at 65 dB decreases by at least 20% when noise is added at 60 dB.
  • The prosthesis must provide a hearing gain of at least 10 dB in the speech index or a 10% gain in intelligibility during speech audiometry tests. It must also have an acceptable power reserve for the renewal period (5 years).
  • The hearing aid must be worn for at least 4 hours a day during the trial phase.
  • The hearing aid must appear on the list of hearing aids covered by the CNS (file B3 of the CNS statutes).

These conditions are defined in the CNS's statutes.

I click on the "MY PRACTICAL STEPS" tab to find out how to proceed.

What exactly do I need to do?

There are 4 stages to getting a hearing aid:

STEP 1

I book an appointment with the Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) specialist of my choice. If the doctor diagnoses hearing loss requiring a hearing aid, they will issue a medical prescription.

STEP 2

With my prescription, I go directly to the hearing aid provider of my choice.

STEP 3

The audioprosthetist conducts audiometric tests and a targeted medical history. They verify whether the conditions for reimbursement are met. Based on the examinations carried out, the audioprosthetist suggests one or more hearing aids that are suited to my needs and comply with the CNS criteria.

STEP 4

Once the hearing aid is chosen, the audioprosthetist prepares a fitting report. They send the invoice and the report to the CNS for coverage via the third-party payment system. I only pay the audioprosthetist for the portion not covered by health insurance, if applicable.

When can I renew my hearing aid?

From the date my hearing aid is issued, the renewal period is 5 years, reduced to 3 years for those under 18. For minors, ear moulds can be renewed without any waiting period.

Good to know

  • No waiting period applies if there is a worsening of hearing loss by 20 dB compared to the loss recorded during the previous fitting.
  • Renewal periods are calculated from the date of the service related to the last hearing correction device covered. The "date of service" refers to the date the hearing correction device was issued.

Condition to be met

Renewal will only be approved if the audioprosthetic results with the new hearing aid are at least equivalent to those obtained with the previous device, or if the previous hearing aid is no longer functional.

How is my hearing aid covered?

The method of payment for my hearing aid depends on whether I buy it in Luxembourg or abroad.

I buy my hearing aid in Luxembourg

I don't pay the costs covered by health insurance in advance. Under the third-party payment system, the CNS pays the audioprosthesist directly.

I purchase my hearing aid abroad

If I purchase my hearing aid in one of the European Union countries, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, or Liechtenstein, I must pay the costs upfront.

To obtain reimbursement, I need to send the following to the CNS:

  • my paid invoice, and
  • the fitting report issued by the audioprosthetist abroad.

If the conditions for coverage are met, the CNS will proceed with the reimbursement.

I cannot purchase a hearing aid in a country other than those mentioned above (e.g., the United States).

For cross-border workers: Under European legislation, the health insurance fund in the country of residence is responsible for covering medical supplies and healthcare provided there, not the CNS. I must therefore contact the relevant fund in my country of residence if I wish to purchase a hearing aid there.

Reimbursement rate

Hearing aids are fully covered (100%) based on a flat-rate amount.

For an adult, €950 is covered per device (€1,900 for a stereo system).

Children under 18 years old are entitled to an additional €450 per device.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

If I am a cross-border worker, what about the coverage of my hearing aids?

Under European legislation, the health insurance fund in the country of residence is responsible for covering medical supplies and healthcare provided in that country, not the CNS. If I wish to purchase a hearing aid in my country of residence, I must contact the relevant health insurance fund to arrange for coverage.

What are the flat-rate prices for devices, earpieces and accessories for hearing correction?
