Leave for family reasons
My child currently requires special care and attention due to illness or an accident, and it is vital for me to be present during the convalescence.
To accompany my child who is ill, has had an accident or is subject to an isolation measure, I can obtain a leave for family reasons from the CNS.
I can use the online declaration form to send in my medical certificate for leave for family reasons (sick child). This is the same form used to declare a personal illness. I click here to access the form.
Everything I need to know

- Duration of leave

What conditions must I meet to be entitled to leave for family reasons?
Whether I am employed or self-employed, I am entitled to leave for family reasons:
- If my child under the age of 13 is subject to an isolation measure decided or recommended by a competent authority with a view to limiting the spread of an epidemic.
- If the state of health of my child under the age of 18 requires the presence of one of the parents.
Please note! In the second case, the age limit does not apply to children receiving a special supplementary allowance.
Good to know: leave for family reasons will be granted if my child is born within or outside my marriage, or if they have been adopted.
How long is family-related leave?
The duration of leave for family reasons depends on my child's age. For each age group and for each child, I will be entitled to a total of:
- 12 days' leave, from the birth of my child up to the age of 3;
- 18 days' leave from the age of 4 to the age of 12;
- 5 days' leave from the age of 13 to the age of 17, provided the child is hospitalised.
Please note!
The hospitalisation condition does not apply if my child receives a special supplementary allowance.
The total number of days leave is granted for the whole age group. It is therefore not reset to 0 at the start of each year.
Good to know
Leave for family reasons can be split. A fraction of four hours or less counts as half a day.
Both parents are entitled to the same number of days, but cannot take leave for family reasons at the same time.
The balance of days of leave for family reasons can be consulted by the parent(s) on MyGuichet.lu. I am the only person authorised to communicate the days to my employer, if they ask me to do so.
When can I extend my leave for family reasons?
Leave for family reasons can be extended if:
- My child suffers from an exceptionally serious illness or disability, namely:
- Progressive cancer
- A condition requiring acute hospitalisation for more than two consecutive weeks
- Progressive cancer
- My child is subject to quarantine, isolation, eviction or house arrest for imperative public health reasons decided or recommended by the competent authorities with a view to limiting the spread of an epidemic (law of 22.01.2021).
In this case, the certificate from the competent authority (Direction/Inspection de la Santé for Luxembourg) must be sent to the CNS.
What do I have to do to take family-related leave?
What documents do I need?
If my child is ill or had an accident, I must provide a medical certificate attesting to:
- The illness or accident;
- The compulsory presence of one of the parents with the child;
- The duration of the necessary presence.
If my child is subject to an isolation measure, I must provide a certificate produced by the competent authority attesting to the decision or recommendation to impose the measure.
What is the deadline?
I must send the certificate to the CNS, together with my 13-digit identification number and that of my child, before the end of the 3rd working day of absence. The postmark will serve as proof.
However, I must notify my employer or their representative, personally or through an intermediary, orally or in writing, from the first day of absence.
How do I send the certificate?
By post
Caisse nationale de santé
Indemnités pécuniaires
L-2980 LUXEMBOURG
(Letter without postage from Luxembourg)
By online form

What happens to my compensation while I'm on leave for family reasons?
I am an employee
As an employee in the private sector, my salary will, in principle, be maintained by my employer during my leave for family reasons.
Good to know: if my salary continuation comes to an end, the allowance will be paid directly to me by the CNS.
Please note! My leave for family reasons will only be covered if I declare it to the CNS with my medical certificate, and if my employer declares it to the Joint Social Security Centre (Centre commun de la sécurité sociale CCSS).
I am self-employed
If I am self-employed and affiliated to the Mutualité des employeurs, I must also declare my leave for family reasons to the CNS, together with a medical certificate, in order to receive compensation.
